Start with a free activity, then explore the booklet to continue revising.
Your lessons
1. Recognise three symbols of the Republic
The motto
The motto brings together three principles: liberty, equality and fraternity. Learn the French words in this order to recognise the motto.
The flag and anthem
The national flag has three colours: blue, white and red. La Marseillaise is the national anthem. A motto is a phrase; an anthem is a song.
Civic knowledge
In these exercises, distinguish the motto, the flag and the anthem. This is civic knowledge, separate from an assessment of your French proficiency.
Example in French
La devise de la République française est « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité ». Le drapeau français est bleu, blanc, rouge. L’hymne national est « La Marseillaise ».Workshop: your turn to write or speak
Explain in your own words the difference between a motto, an anthem and a flag. Then name the three symbols studied. You may answer aloud; the website does not send any recording.
Free writing is not marked automatically. Your draft stays in your browser during the session. Use fictional situations and names.
Before finishing: check the task requirements, organisation of ideas and language accuracy.
